We all know those couples who are very similar: they do all the same things, dress the same and say the same things. But now there's scientific proof to explain how and why this phenomenon happens...

So if you're in a long-term relationship, is it inevitable that you'll start to look like your partner?
They say opposites attract, but according to these three facts we might actually start turning into our partner!

1. You look similar to begin with

A little-spoken-about fact of dating is that we tend to select romantic partners who are similar to us in some way (or many ways). The technical term is 'assortative mating', which basically means we pick partners who might share similar facial features, characteristics, skills, talents, etc.
Apparently, us humans like genetic similarity because, subconsciously, we want to pass on our own features to our kids, so if we pick someone with lots of similarities to us there's more chance of that happening.

2. Your faces age in the same way

The longer you're with someone, the more of your life you share - that goes without saying. So you'll probably smile at the same funny family moments and cry or frown when things go wrong, and these facial expressions can lead to your faces ageing in similar ways.
In fact, a study conducted by Robert Zajonc, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, found that couples who had been together for 25 years or more actually shared the same lines and wrinkles on their faces!

3. You mirror each other

Mirroring is a dating and relationship phenomenon that is well known. Basically, we tend to mimic and imitate characteristics like vocal intonation, facial expressions and stances of special people in our lives. It helps us bond and makes us feel part of a group, and it's somethng that dating experts advise their clients to do on first dates.
Robert Zajonc decided that mirroring your partner over a long period of time would alter your physical appearance, making couples look like each other.
